Learn moreAnswers to the most common questions about visiting a notary in Germany.
Yes, all meetings are by appointment only. In many cases, we can offer you an appointment at short notice. Please contact us by phone or via our contact form.
In Germany, you have free choice of notary. This means you may choose the notary you trust – regardless of what other parties, estate agents or banks may suggest.
Please always bring a valid identity card or passport. Depending on the nature of the transaction, additional documents may be required – such as Land Registry extracts, articles of association or financing documents. We will inform you in advance which documents are needed in your specific case.
Typically, we first prepare a draft of the notarial deed, which you receive in advance for review. During the notarisation appointment, the notary reads the draft aloud in full, open questions are discussed, and amendments are made. The deed is then signed by all parties. We handle the subsequent execution – such as Land Registry applications or commercial register filings – on your behalf.
Notary fees in Germany are set by the Court and Notary Costs Act (Gerichts- und Notarkostengesetz – GNotKG) and are the same for all notaries. The amount depends on the type and value of the transaction. We are happy to provide you with a non-binding estimate of the expected costs for your specific matter.
Yes, where permitted by law. Currently, certain transactions can be carried out online, for example the formation of a GmbH (German limited liability company) or commercial register filings. Participants take part via video conference and identify themselves using their electronic identity card (eID).
Dr. Ron Baer conducts notarisations in German, English and Dutch. For parties who do not have a sufficient command of German and for whom notarisation in their language is not possible, an interpreter will be engaged.
